Ablative vs Non-Ablative Laser Skin Resurfacing

There are two types of laser treatments for cosmetic skin resurfacing: ablative and non-ablative. Traditional ablative lasers literally vaporization the entire top layer of skin cells. (epidermis) at a very high temperature.  This “scorched earth” or ‘ablative’ approach takes out the good cells with the damaged tissue and can have significant side effects (including pain) and requires a very lengthy healing period.

Non-ablative fractional lasers, however, deliver energy in targeted microbeams rather than in a wide swath. These laser beams penetrate deep below the surface of the skin into the lower layer of tissue (dermis) to target damaged skin cells, while sparing the surrounding tissue from harm. This means no significant pain and much faster healing, while still dramatically improving skin color, texture, and tone, and diminishing scars, fine lines, and wrinkles.
