In this article the skin rejuvenation experts at SpaMedica in Grand Rapids answer our patients frequently asked questions about radiofrequency microneedling.
What Is Radiofrequency Microneedling?
Radiofrequency Microneedling – also called “fractional” microneedling – is a state-of-the-art skin rejuvenating procedure that combines microneedling with radiofrequency (RF) energy into a single procedure.
The handpiece inserts a network of ultra-fine, clinical grade needles into the deeper layer of skin cells (dermis), creating a series of invisible “micro wounds.” These tiny wounds trigger the body’s natural healing process – stimulating the production of collagen and elastin. Collagen is a protein which forms the firm, plump, smooth scaffolding of healthy, youthful skin. While elastin is the natural protein that gives skin it’s youthful “snap back” that prevents sagging and wrinkling.
These microneedles also deliver RF energy deep into the lower layers of the skin, which further stimulates the body’s natural production of collagen and elastin. As the skin naturally repairs itself, the deep layers of the skin are renewed and replenished, resulting in a diminished appearance of wrinkles and tighter, plumper, smoother more youthful skin.
What Skin Conditions Does Radiofrequency Microneedling Treat?
State-of-the-art radiofrequency microneedling technology elevates traditional needle-only microneedling for more highly effective treatment of fine lines & wrinkles, acne, scars, stretch marks, sagging, sun damage, dark spots, and other skin imperfections and signs of aging.
Dr. Solon uses Morpheus8 radiofrequency microneedling technology which also treats more than surface skin issues. The Morpheus8 also “melts” fat – allowing Dr. Solon to contour away unwanted jowls, bra rolls, and more. In fact, when used on the face, Morpheus 8 has been called a “non-surgical facelift” for its ability to tone, lift and contour the skin.
How Does Radiofrequency Microneedling Work?
Radiofrequency Microneedling delivers radiofrequency (RF) heat energy deep into the skin via tiny micro-needles. Beams of RF energy travel through the needles, causing microscopic burn wounds beneath the skin – while leaving the rest of the tissue unaffected.
These tiny “injuries” trigger the skin’s healing response, stimulating the body’s own production of collagen and elastin. As the skin renews its own cells, it becomes plumper, more elastic, smooth and toned. The result is minimized wrinkles, lines and scars – as well as tightening and toned skin. Morpheus8 radiofrequency microneedling also employs RF heat energy to actually melt and mold the fat to create more youthful contours.
Why is Radiofrequency Better than Regular Microneedling?
Radiofrequency microneedling generates collagen in two ways. The microneedles cause their own mico-injuries deep in the dermis – while the fractional radiofrequency heats up the dermis in 360 degrees around each microneedle for further collagen synthesis.
The advanced Morpheus8 radiofrequency microneedling system used at SpaMedica in Grand Rapids also melts away unwanted fat while tightening the skin – which microneedling alone does not do. This enables more precise “sculpting” of the facial contours for a tighter and more youthful appearance.
How Many Radiofrequency Microneedling Treatments Will I Need?
Every person’s skin is unique, and each person has different skin concerns. So the number of radiofrequency microneedling treatments a patient will need depends upon the location, type and extent of the skin damage. For example, deeper lines and scars may require more treatments than fine lines.
Most patient’s will see visible improvement in skin tone, tightness and texture after just a single Morpheus8 radiofrequency microneedling. Typically, however, three radiofrequency microneedling treatments scheduled 3 to 4 weeks apart are optimal for achieving maximum results.
Are there Side Effects or Downtime with Radiofrequency Microneedling?
There is no “downtime” with radiofrequency microneedling, so patients can resume their normal daily activities or go back to work after Morpheus8. Most patients do, however, experience some mild redness that typically disappears in a few hours to a few days. Some patients may experience mild skin sensitivity for a day or two after the treatment.
Risk of infection is extremely rare when radiofrequency microneedling is performed in a sterile clinical environment by a licensed medical provider, such as SpaMedica in Grand Rapids, MI.
NOTE: Radiofrequency microneedling does NOT cause cold sores. However, any radiofrequency microneedling system may activate Herpes Simplex cold sores in individuals with a history of them. So always discuss any tendency to cold sores with your doctor.
Who Can Get Radiofrequency Microneedling ?
One of the biggest advantages of radiofrequency microneedling treatment is that it is safe on all skin types, colors and tones. Many laser treatments canNOT be used on darker skin tones, including Black individuals or other people of color. But Morpheus8 is safe and effective on even very dark skin.
Because it is a natural, non-invasive treatment, radiofrequency microneedling is also safe for patients of virtually every age. We have Morpheus8 patients at our Grand Rapids med spa who are from teens suffering from acne scar to women in their seventies who are fighting the signs of aging.
Individuals with certain medical conditions should avoid radiofrequency microneedling, including: Keloid scarring, eczema, active infections, actinic keratosis, history of Herpes Simplex (cold sores), heart abnormalities, use of blood thinners, immunosuppressive disorders, scleroderma, or collagen vascular disease. Patients with new scars less than 6 months old, and pregnant or nursing women should also avoid radiofrequency microneedling.
