Acne Scar Removal with Radiofrequency Microneedling
Although acne is most commonly associated with adolescents and teens, acne breakouts can afflict adult men and women of any age. And, thanks to constant mask wearing during the COVID-19 pandemic, more adults are suffering from acne than ever before. A new term for face mask induced acne has even sprung up: “maskne”!
But, unfortunately, even after the pandemic is over and masks are finally discarded – and long after the acne is gone – unsightly and embarrassing acne scars can remain.
Fortunately, SpaMedica in Grand Rapids offers the most advanced, effective and minimally invasive acne scar resurfacing treatment: state-of-the-art Morpheus8 Radiofrequency Microneedling. SpaMedica GR was one of the first providers in Grand Rapids to offer this 100% natural, affordable, and highly effective treatment for acne scarring. In this our skilled medical assistant Amy Howe discusses how Radiofrequency Microneedling resurfaces skin to remove acne scars.
What Causes Acne Scars?
Acne breakouts occurs when the hair follicles become clogged with dirt, debris, dead skin cells, and sebum (the oil secreted by the sebaceous glands). Bacteria becomes trapped in the blocked pores and starts to grow underneath the surface of the skin. As the skin becomes inflamed from this infection, ugly pimples erupt. When the pimple eventually ruptures or “pops”, it damages the surrounding skin and can lead to permanent scarring.
Acne scars are the result of the body’s natural wound healing system. In normal undamaged skin, collagen fibers are arranged in a random formation, which keeps skin soft, supple and flexible. But when the body develops scar tissue, the collagen fibers become organized and “cross-linked” for greater strength and protection of the injured area. When this stronger, thicker fibrous tissue replaces the damaged skin cells it creates a scar.
Types of Acne Scars
The type and size of the acne scars that develop will depend upon the depth of the original pimple, its location, and several other variables. Pitted acne scars are sometimes described as “icepick scars,” because they are indented rather than raised. Certain other types of pitted acne scars are referred to as “box scars.”
“Rolling” acne scars are also very common. These are shallower and wider, with sloped edges, giving them a “rolling” or “valley” appearance. Unfortunately, rolling acne scars get worse with age as the skin starts to lose its tightness.
Initially, acne scars are red or pink in color. Sometimes they turn brownish, but typically over time they become colorless – looking almost white against normal skin pigmentation.
Reduce Acne Scars with Radiofrequency Microneedling
Unfortunately, acne scars do not generally go away on their own. And clinical studies have proven what acne sufferers already know: acne scars cause a person to feel more self-conscious and less confident about their appearance. In teens, this problem is often even worse – with acne scars leading to mocking or bullying that can leave a lifetime of emotional scars.
Previously, the only effective treatments for permanently resurfacing severe acne scars were painful lasers, that came with several days of downtime. But revolutionary new Morpheus8 Radiofrequency Microneedling harnesses the body’s own healing processes to smooth and resurface acne scars – naturally, affordably and with very little downtime.
Radiofrequency microneedling is an affordable, minimally invasive treatment performed in our Grand Rapids office. The Morpheus8 system creates tiny but very deep channels in the skin with clinical-grade, ultra-fine needles. The microscopic “injuries” caused by the needle pricks stimulate the body’s natural wound healing processes – activating the production of new collagen and elastin, which are the building blocks of healthy skin.
And when radiofrequency is delivered in conjunction with microneedling for acne scars, studies have proven that it leads to exponentially more rapid improvement of acne scarring than microneedling alone.
The radiofrequency thermal energy is delivered deep into the lower layers of the skin (dermis) through the extremely fine and deeply inserted microneedles – which further helps activate the skin’s cellular repair process: old or damaged skin cells are replaced by new, healthy, tissue as the collagen and elastin fibers resurface the skin and fill in the acne pits and scars!
