Does Icon laser hair removal hurt?

No. Because the Icon laser targets only the hair, without harming the surrounding skin, it is not painful. Typically patients report that Icon laser hair removal feels like a mild “snapping” sensation, as the laser cycles through the treatment.

Unlike other older laser hair removal machines, the advance laser technology used by Icon also includes a “chill tip” that cools the skin before and after the laser pulse. This significantly reduces discomfort. We can also help minimize any discomfort by using numbing cream, as well as ice and/or a cold air blower.

Afterwards some patients may experience a sensation similar to a mild sunburn – but this generally dissipates quickly. Patients universally agree that any temporary discomfort is far less than that of waxing or plucking – and well worth the benefit of not having to shave daily.

How does Icon laser hair removal work?

Laser hair removal works by emitting a wavelength that targets the pigment in the hair, but not in the skin. As the hair absorbs the light energy from the laser, it destroys the hair follicle.

What’s the difference between Icon laser hair removal and electrolysis?

Laser hair removal is more advanced then electrolysis in many respects. With electrolysis each follicle must be targeted individually – which takes a great deal of time. However, the hair removal laser can target large areas of hair at one time, in a very short time period. Additionally, Icon laser hair removal is reported to be significantly more comfortable than electrolysis.

How Many Icon laser hair removal treatments do I need?

Hair grows in phases, with some follicles resting while other follicles are in an active growth phase. The laser energy is only attracted to hair follicles during their growth phase, so multiple hair removal sessions will be typically be needed to target every follicle during its growth phase.

Patients should, however, avoid extra heat on the treated area – including saunas, hot tubs, tanning, sun exposure, etc. – for the remainder of the day.
