FDA Approves Juvéderm for Under-Eye Dark Circle Treatment
Juvéderm is the most popular dermal filler, most well-known for filling wrinkles and lines and plumping lips. Juvéderm actually refers to a family of facial fillers, with different formulas each designed to plump and fill different areas of the face.
In February of this year (2022) the FDA approved Juvéderm® Volbella™ XC for use in treating dark circles under the eyes. This is wonderful news for many men and women, since undereye circles have traditionally been one of the most difficult aesthetic problems to treat.
While undereye circles can be due to lack of rest, the most stubborn dark undereye circles to treat are those that are hereditary. And while undereye circles can affect both women and men of any age – they typically become worse with age as the delicate skin under the eyes becomes thinner.
What is Juvéderm® Volbella™ XC?
Juvéderm® Volbella™ XC was approved by the FDA in 2016 for augmenting the lips and chin and filling fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth. Like all Juvéderm® formulas, Volbella™ XC is made of a synthetic formulation of hyaluronic acid – a substance that is found naturally in the human body.
Hyaluronic acid in fillers help keep skin hydrated, plump and youthful. But, unlike other hyaluronic acid fillers, Juvéderm® Volbella™ XC uses a patented VYCROSS technology that has a lower molecular weight, giving it the softest, thinnest, and smoothest consistency of all Juvéderm® formulas – making it ideal for camouflaging bags and dark circles in the delicate under-eye area.
Clinical Studies for Juvéderm Under-Eye Dark Circle Treatment
Clinical studies were conducted on patients who received Juvéderm® Volbella™ XC for treatment of under-eye dark circles. The study participants reported significant improvement in the hollow look of the under-eye area.
And three months after treatment with Juvéderm® Volbella™ XC, 90% of the patients in the study stated that they were no longer bothered by the appearance of their under-eye area and were satisfied with their Juvéderm® Volbella™ XC treatment results. (0% of the patients also said that they would recommend Juvéderm® Volbella™ XC under eye dark circle treatment to a friend!
How Juvéderm® Volbella™ XC Treats Under Eye Dark Circles
Lack of tissue volume under the eye is the primary cause of under-eye dark circles. As a result, blood vessels (‘veins’) show through the thin area of skin, causing the appearance of dark circles. But hyaluronic acid injection not only “plumps” the area to conceal the blood vessels, but also helps to stimulate production of collagen and elastin.
Juvéderm® Volbella™ XC is injected through extremely fine, tiny needles when treating the delicate area under the eyes. While cheeks and lips require a larger volume of Juvéderm, typically only a small amount of Juvéderm® Volbella™ XC is needed for the undereye are – making it an affordable treatment.
Our skilled medical aesthetician/medical assistant Amy will carefully and precisely inject the Juvéderm® Volbella™ XC to build up volume in the undereye hollows, until desired results are yielded.
(Keep in mind, however that Juvéderm® Volbella™ XC does not treat undereye dark circles due to pigmentation. For lightening areas of skin pigmentation, one of our other skin treatments would be a better fit.)
Juvéderm® Volbella™ XC Under Eye Dark Circle Treatment Results
There is no downtime after this highly effective dark circle treatment. And, even better, results can typically be noticed immediately and will continue to improve up to two weeks after treatment.
Following a Juvéderm® Volbella™ XC Under Eye Dark Circle Treatment, patients can usually immediately resume their normal daily activities or return to work work. Just do not touch or rub the undereye area for at least 48 hours – so that the Juvéderm® Volbella™ XC has time to set and does not spread.
Results of the Juvéderm® Volbella™ XC Under Eye Dark Circle Treatment are also long-lasting! All hyaluronic acid fillers, including Juvéderm, are gradually absorbed by the body over time. How long your results will last will depend on how fast your body metabolizes the fillers – as well as how much movement you have in your facial expressions. Most patients only need 1 – 2 treatments per year.
